Ideas, Research, & Drafts
Honestly, this is just a space to keep me accountable for all of the personal projects I haven’t completed. However, I feel that it’s because none of these projects are more critical than Vocal Type. So we’ll see what happens.
Sigma—The S Thing Font Family
Sigma is a font family I’ve been tinkering with since 2018. It’s essentially taking that ‘S’ thing everyone used to draw in school and expanding it into a full typeface with enough language support to cover most of the Western Hemisphere and Europe. ¶ Eventually, my hope is to turn it into a variable font that transforms from pointy letters to bubble letters to blocky letters to grotesk letters. This is the first year (2024) that I haven’t had time to make any progress on it. ¶
Joopiter
This display typeface began as an experiment inspired by Pharrell’s In My Mind album cover, which first sparked my interest in graphic design. I started by trying to recreate the typeface from the album cover from memory, but I quickly realized I wasn’t satisfied with the result. After adding contrast, I discovered that it resembled an updated, more expansive version of one of Alexander Girard’s designs. ¶ It’s a mess with all of these alternates, so the last thing I remember was breaking these different styles up into separate typefaces.
Ed Jones Gothic
Ed Jones Gothic is a typeface inspired by my years of experience working for my parents’ company, Farm Service. They run a soil manufacturing company called Farm Service. Starting in the seventh grade and all the way through college, I worked as their office assistant—typing delivery tickets, invoicing, taking messages, etc. ¶ Well, whenever a telemarketer would call, my dad and I would say “Ed Jones speaking” to let them know that they’ve “got the wrong number.” ¶ As for the actual letters, these are based on the handpainted letters from the very first sign my dad commissioned when the company first started in 1980. ¶
