Who Is Vocal Type?

I founded Vocal Type to address the lack of representation in design, particularly in typography. Growing up, I often felt like my voice—and those of my community—wasn't being heard in the creative spaces I occupied. As a Black designer, I saw the need for a platform that would amplify underrepresented voices and celebrate the richness of cultures and identities often overlooked in the design industry. Vocal Type became my response, a space where the stories of marginalized communities could be told through type, with a focus on empowerment, activism, and cultural representation.

In its earliest days, Vocal Type’s focus was on creating typefaces that reflected historical moments—whether it was the Civil Rights Movement, Black Lives Matter, or other pivotal moments in global history. The work became a way for me to contribute to something larger than just design—using typography as a tool to raise awareness, foster understanding, and amplify voices that had long been silenced. With every font release, the goal was not just to create beautiful letterforms, but to design with intention and purpose, to give shape to the narratives that need to be told.

Vocal Type has always been about creating a platform for designers who don’t often see themselves reflected in the dominant narratives of the industry. It’s about pushing boundaries and making space for those whose stories haven’t been represented. The foundry is not just about typography—it’s a commitment to social change through design, showing that our cultural diversity should be celebrated in every project and every design decision we make.
