Visual Fields

As I’ve mentioned throughout the site, I’m a two-time brain tumor survivor. What I haven’t mentioned is that the tumor, prior to its removal, was pressing against my optic nerve, and as a result, I have no peripheral vision, and I’m approximately 50% blind in my left eye. I’ve lived with this for so long, and I’ve understood what I can and can’t do because of it for so long that I never really thought about it. ¶ I mention this because it leads to how this idea for Visual Fields came to be. Sometime in 2023, for some reason, my mom decided to come into the room with me during my eye exam. The first part of the exam takes place in a different room, where you sit in front of this machine that measures your peripheral and central vision. It’s called a Visual Field Test. Once I finished this Visual Field Test, I came back to the main exam room, where my mom was sitting, and they tested my peripheral vision once again, this time without the machine. After we were finished, my mom asked, “How is it that you are able to do what you do while seeing so little?” It’s from this question that I came up with the idea of Visual Fields. ¶

Visual Fields is a collection of interviews conducted with design visionaries who live and operate with visual impairments within their given visual fields of practice.

Our Name & Marks

The name Visual Fields is a double entendre. On one hand it applies to visual fields of practice: graphic design, fashion, architecture, type, and so on. On the other hand, and this is what inspired our mark, there’s the eye exam known as a visual field test. This exam tests your peripheral vision. During this test, you have to stare straight ahead and press a button indicating that you’ve seen a flashing white dot. ¶
