TIME Magazine
This issue was released just a year after Amanda Gorman’s eloquent poetry at Joe Biden’s presidential Inauguration soothed many Americans still reeling just two weeks after pro-Trump supporters staged an insurrection at the Capitol. ¶ For their 2021 February issue, Time magazine collaborated with American author, professor, anti-racist activist, and historian of race and discriminatory policy in the U.S., Ibram X. Kandi. Under the title of The Renaissance is Black, this special issue celebrates the power of Black art. ¶
For this issue, I was asked to design an introductory spread for Ibram X. Kandi’s article, The Renaissance Is Black. Thinking of Renaissance art, I was inspired by the overly ornate frames of the era, paired with contemporary typography.
